When my coworker asked for my opinion regarding which travel credit card to apply for, there was no question that I was hard selling the Citi ThankYou Premier (I’ve only listed the million card benefits here). But she brought up a new contestant: the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. So I thought it’ll be good idea to see how the new Chase Sapphire Preferred card would compare. So, let the duel begin!
Here’s a little chart to show the comparison:
Just by scanning both cards, the Chase Sapphire Preferred seems to be a better deal with it’s lower annual fee and the 2% equivalent cashback on all travel and restaurant purchases. But the Citi ThankYou Premier card definitely gives you more “bang for your buck” with it’s free domestic companion flight ticket and 15% off all flight travel purchases for you and your party! I can’t see how the Sapphire Preferred card can beat the Thank You Premier card in terms of being a travel friendly credit card. Even with it’s restaurant bonuses, there are so many credit cards available right now with no annual fee giving a 5% rotating restaurant bonus that it’s not even worth paying the $95 annual fee for a 2% cashback.
