30 Day Walking Challenge

Summer’s already here. I wanted to share a little bet that we had here on FatPiggy. It was inspired by the MyFitnessPal blog post to complete a 30 day walking challenge. Us FatPiggy authors have been using fitness trackers for a while now, but have never really stretched ourselves too much on the fitness realm.  So we started this fitness challenge to not only fully utilize our fitness trackers but also as a kickstarter to a more active lifestyle. And doing the challenge as a group help make it a little bit more interesting – both via encouragement and competitiveness (and maybe a little trash talk, too.  😀 )

If you’re interested, here are the basic rules and guidelines that we put together. You can check the MyFitnessPal blog post for other rules, we chose this one because we were averaging 4k-5k steps on a daily basis already.

  • minimum goal of 10,000 steps daily
  • rest days every 7th day (only 4 in the 30-day period)

Just a side note, walking more doesn’t necessarily help you lose weight. The goal of the challenge is to help you become more active. They say it takes 21 days for someone to build a habit. We were hoping that this challenge would help us build a habit of walking more. Also to help decrease our carbon footprint a little.

Let us know in the comments if you’ve done this or similar challenges before. We will be talking about our fitness trackers in an upcoming post soon.

Vanguard Index Fund Purchase

Vanguard LogoI wanted to do something with my cash instead of just keeping it in an Ally savings account and being inspired by the simple lazy portfolio type of investing, I decided to buy some index funds from Vanguard. Why Vanguard and not another service like E-Trade? E-Trade is a broker and does not actively manage any funds, which means you end up paying more fees. This may be fine if you decide to purchase specific stocks, but if you are planning to buy only index funds, then it’s better to use a service like Vanguard. Vanguard actually manages the index funds so you will pay for the management fees only instead of both the fund management fee plus transaction fee. E-Trade needs to put the trade to Vanguard or another fund management company (depending on which fund you purchase) and therefore needs to pay a transaction fee. But by buying directly from Vanguard, you get to skip the third party transaction fee.

Profit Calculator for eBay & Amazon Promotional Credit

Some self-promotion for today.  As an eBay seller, figuring out how to price things has always been cumbersome. There are many sites (including direct from eBay) on fee calculations, but never any that really helps me figure out what to set as my minimum sell price.  So we decided to create our own handy tool – a new Android mobile app Profit Calculator for eBay – now available on Google Play Store and Amazon AppStore.

This app will let you know how much you should sell or resell that item you bought. It takes into account the sales tax you’ve paid, so you don’t lose out on it either. And in the end, it clearly tells you how much you can cash out from PayPal.

For a limited time (and your mileage may vary), Amazon is offering $1 promotional credit good towards Kindle books or MP3 downloads. As a quick reference, you can always check your promotional credit here.

Santander Credit Card Offer

Santander Bravo Credit CardSantander currently is running a credit card deal for their Bravo card, where you will get 10,000 bonus rewards (worth $100) when spending $1,000 in 3 months. I like this card because you earn 3x rewards from gas station, supermarket and restaurant purchases which is the highest while these categories are missing from a quarterly category from the other credit cards. The bad thing is there is a $49 annual fee after the first year since the extra20 checking and savings accounts from Santander does not qualify as a Select account. The other option to get 3x back for supermarkets is the American Express Blue Cash Everyday Credit card and 3x back for gas using the Bank of America Credit Card.

Also as a Santander Banking customer, paying the Bravo credit card bill is as easy as a internal fund transfer.
